Acupuncture is a very old healing art that has its roots in China and is one of the components of traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM. TCM contends that there is a vital force, referred to as chi that flows throughout the body and keeps it living. The theory behind acupuncture is that illness or pain occurs when that flow is blocked or impeded. By inserting sterile, delicate acupuncture needles into specific points along the body, chi can be restored, and health can return. Modern research suggests that acupuncture can increase circulation to an area and cause the brain to secrete endorphins, a hormone that has sedative and analgesic effects.
In a typical acupuncture treatment, the patient lies down and relaxes as the needles do the work. Sometimes low intensity electrical stimulation is applied to the needles, enhancing the effect. Patients can expect to feel more relaxed after treatment.
